Training Institutions and Writer-in-Residence Programs

The literary arts is a thriving community within Alberta. Universities help support and encourage the creative flow of ideas through workshops, English programs, and creative writing programs. Famous Alberta authors, such as W.O Mitchell, have instructed in the art of writing while instilling a creative spark in their students.

The following section looks at the history of workshops and writing programs at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta while exploring current programs offered. Programs such as the University of Calgary's Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme and the University of Alberta's Writer-in-Residence program provide writers with the chance to share ideas, and to help with the technical side of preparing a manuscript.

This section also takes a look at Thomas King's life and his contribution to Albertan literary arts. A professor of literature at the University of Lethbridge, King's work has become important within Alberta's literary community because of the social commentaries that pervade his writing.
