Shakespeare in the Park
Shakespeare in the Park is a Calgary theatre company established by the
Theatre Arts Program at
Mount Royal College. In participating in the
company, young performers and technicians are given a chance to work
closely with established directors, coaches, designers, and actors in
order to gain experience in a professional setting. The program is highly
competitive amongst Mount Royal College students, vying for a position in
the program along with students from across Alberta and all of Canada.
Shakespeare in the Park has been presenting
Shakespearean classics since 1987, presenting live theatre at Prince's
Island Park in Calgary. Performances are informal and often creative
interpretations of William Shakespeare's work. Entertaining and lively
performances attract people of all ages. Corporate, private, and
government sponsors help to support Shakespeare in the Park and audience
donations are also helpful.
On a warm summer day, one can take in the sounds of an
interesting version of an Elizabethan classic while enjoying a picnic outdoors.
Some individuals bring their own picnics to the play, while others can
order specially
prepared Shakespeare in the Park picnic baskets made at the River Café.
Shakespeare in the City is an outreach program developed by Shakespeare in
the Park that brings the theatre to those who can not attend performances
in the park.
The company's production schedule begins in mid-May
with the season running through until the end of August.
