Pump (Patent No: 104049)

Inventor: Cox, George Irvin

Location: Ponoka

Comments: see Ponoka Panorama; biographical information; from South Dakota 1899; homesteaded; 1902 boarding house; Cox Automatic Stock Pump Co., working model, steel frame closed on 3 sides, tray attached to pump, ran on a circular track with livestock pumping to fill the tray with water; invented disc sharpener which sharpened discs while working; attached churn to baby's rocker so wife could churn butter and rock the baby simultaneously; 7 children

Description: Claim-1. In a device or the class described the combination¬ with the pump; an operating handle therefor, of a substantially horizontal revolubly supported platform extended around the pump, a drinking trough secured to said platform, means for causing the rotation of said platform has drinking trough to operate the pump and means for conveying the water pumped to the drinking trough, as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a device of the class described the combination with the pump, an operating handle therefor, of a substantially horizontal, revolubly supported platform extending around the pump, a drinking trough secured to said platform, means for causing the rotation of said platform and drinking trough to operate the pump, means for conveying the water pumped to the drinking trough and means for preventing the animals from drinking from the trough except at one side thereof as and for the purpose specified.

3. In an automatic stock pump the combination with the pump and handle therefor of a substantially horizontal revolubly supported platform, a drinking trough laterally extending from the same, a master annular gear secured the platform and rotating therewith, a pinion connected thereto means for causing the rotation of the pinion to operate the pump handle and means for conveying the water pumped is the drinking trough, as and for the purpose specified.

4. In an automatic pump apparatus the combination with the pump of an annular master gear, a plurality of rollers supporting the same in a substantially horizontal plane, a fixed pinion carrying the said annular gear, means for causing the rotation of the pinion to reciprocate the pump handle, a frame secured to said annular gear and laterally extending from the same, a drinking trough secured thereto, and means for conveying the water pumped from the spout of the pump to the drinking trough, as and for the purpose specified.

5. In an automatic pump apparatus the combination with the pump of an annular master gear, a plurality of rollers supporting the same in a substantially horizontal plane, a fixed pinion carrying the said annular gear, means for causing the rotation of the pinion to reciprocate the pump handle, a frame secured to said annular gear and laterally extending from the same, a drinking trough secured thereto, means for conveying the water pumped from the spout of the pump to the drinking trough and a netting covering the frame and having an opening at one side only the thereof to permit the cattle to drink from the trough, as and for the purpose specified.

6. In an automatic stock pump the combination with the pump and pivotally supported operating handle therefore, of an annular gear extending around the pump, a plurality of rollers supporting said gear wheel in a substantially horizontal plane, a pinion operatively connected to said gear wheel; a rigid bracket supporting the same, a shaft forming a connection between the pinion and bracket and journalled in the latter, a crank connected to the same, a pitman connected to said crank and the operating handle of the pump, a frame secured to the annular gear wheel and laterally extending thereform, a drinking trough secured thereto, as enclosure of netting for the frame having an opening at one side of the drinking trough only, and a supporting wheel on the underside of said drinking trough and means for conducting the water from the spout of the pump to the drinking trough, as and for the purpose specified.

7. In an automatic pump apparatus the combination with the pump and the operating handle therefore, of a rotatably supported annular gear encircling the same, means for causing the rotation of the same to reciprocate the pump handle, a frame work secured to said gear and laterally extending therefrom, a drinking trough secured thereon, and a covering of netting or the like for said framework adapted to enclose the pump and leaving an opening at one side only of the trough and an adjustable supported bar extending across said opening adapted to bear on the necks of the cattle when drinking, and means for conducting the water from the spout of the pump to the drinking trough, as and for the purpose specified.
