Speed Varying Device for Fluid Drives (Patent No: 432230)

Inventor: Kempling, Thomas E.

Location: Drumheller

Comments: not produced; Tom d 1997; member of Museums Alberta; volunteer researcher for Inventive Spirit

Description: Thomas E. Kempling. Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, 1st January, 1946. Filed 24th April, 1944. Serial No. 513,384.

Claim.—1. A circular fluid drive power transmitter for attachment to the shaft of a constant speed prime mover for the transmission of varying speeds therefrom, of the type described, comprising in combination, a power drive shaft with radial driving blades within a fluid filled housing and attached to said housing, said housing being ratable with said drive shaft and blades, a driven shaft bearably mounted to enter said housing in axial alignment with said drive shaft, runner blades attached radially to this driven shaft in close proximity to said driving blades, a shift sleeve disposed to bearably enclose said driven shaft and bearably sealed within the wall of said housing, a rotable plate concentrically attached to said sleeve within said housing, and slotted apertures radially disposed in said plate to slidably contain said runner blades to increase or reduce said blade surfaces in the fluid stream occasioned by the rotation of said driving blades.

2. A speed varying drive of the fluid power transmission type, comprising in combination, a rotable drive shaft with a fluid filled housing attached, a driven shaft having sealed entry into said housing, drive blades radiating from the end of said drive shaft, driven blades radiating from the end of said driven shaft, a change speed slidable sleeve enclosing said driven shaft and bearing in said housing, a slotted plate rotable within said housing and with said sleeve, said slots radiating from said sleeve for the slidable passage of said drive blades therethrough to vary the exposure of said blades to the rotating fluid medium as influenced by the revolving drive blades, and conventional shift gear mechanism.

3. A fluid drive power transmitter and speed control device comprising in combination, a power drive shaft rotably motivated from and by a power take-off, radial driving blades radially disposed with respect to said shaft and attached to and within a fluid filled housing affixed to the end of said shaft, a driven shaft bearably mounted to enter said housing in a sealed manner in axial alignment with said drive shaft, runner blades attached radially to this driven shaft in close proximity to said driving blades, a shift sleeve disposed to bearably enclose said driven shaft and bearably sealed within, the wall of said housing, a rotable plate concentrically attached to said sleeve within said housing and slidable with same and having slotted apertures radially disposed therethrough to permit said runner plates to be passed over by said plate for variable exposure to the power transmitting fluid, braking means exteriorly disposed with respect to the said housing: to stop said runner blade rapidly, said apertures in said plate to facilitate the passage of the fluid therethrough.

Claims allowed, 3.
