Method of Opening an Orifice Through a Well Casing and Apparatus Therefor (Patent No: 524696)

Inventor: Zandmer, Solis Myron

Location: Banff

Comments: N/A

Description:
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. For use in a well hole, a casing adapted to be lowered into a well hole, and a loaded gun attached to said casing; said gun comprising a barrel secured to and through the wall of said casing and extending forwardly away from said casing, a projectile in the forward portion of said barrel, a disc in said barrel and spaced rearwardly from said projectile to define therewith and with the bore of said barrel a chamber, said disc carrying a percussion cap, an explosive charge in said chamber, a sleeve in said barrel retaining said disc in effective position, and engaging said disc, a plunger slidable in said sleeve and carrying a striker for setting off said cap, means including a shear pin for releasably holding said plunger against displacement toward said cap, and means providing an air chamber bearing against said plunger and deformable by hydraulic pressure within said casing pneumatically to apply pressure against said plunger tending to move the same toward said cap, said sleeve being adapted to beloved toward said casing and out of said barrel by said disc when reacting to the force generated by the explosion of said charge.

2. For use in a well hole, a casing adapted to be lowered into a well hole, and a loaded gun attached to said casing; said gun comprising a barrel secured to an d through the wall of' said casing and extending forwardly away from said casing, a projectile in the forward portion of said barrel, a disc in said barrel, a charge forwardly of said disc, charge igniting means for igniting said charge, a sleeve held in said barrel retaining said disc in operative position against said disc, a plunger movable in said sleeve for setting off said igniting means, means including a shear pin holding said plunger against movement, and a deformable plug providing an air chamber deformable by hydraulic pressure in said casing to apply pressure against said plunger for rupturing said shear pin and pneumatically impelling said plunger forwardly to set off said igniting means, said sleeve being adapted to be expelled out of said barrel into said casing by said disc when reacting to the force generated by said charge.

3. A loaded gun for a well hole casing, comprising a barrel adapted to be secured in a hole through the casing, a projectile in the forward end of said barrel, a disc in said barrel carrying a percussion cap, an explosive charge between said projectile and said disc, a sleeve in said barrel engaging said disc, a plunger movable in said sleeve and carrying a striker for setting off said percussion cap, means including a shear pin holding said plunger against movement, and a deformable member in said sleeve closing an end of said sleeve providing an air chamber to apply pneumatic pressure, when deformed, against said plunger tending to move said plunger toward said disc, said sleeve being adapted to be expelled out of said barrel by said disc when reacting to the force generated by said charge.

4. A loaded gun for a well hole casing, comprising a barrel having a rearward portion adapted to be secured through a hole in the casing, a projectile in the forward end of said barrel, a disc in said barrel rearwardly of said projectile, an explosive charge between said projectile and said disc, said disc carrying a percussion cap, a sleeve in said barrel rearwardly of said disc and engaging said disc, a plunger in said sleeve carrying a striker for setting off said percussion cap, means including a frangible member holding said plunger against movement, and a deformable member forming with said plunger an air chamber for applying pneumatic pressure to said plunger when said member is deformed by external pressure, said sleeve being adapted to be expelled out of said barrel by said disc when reacting to the force generated by said charge.
