Adjustable Trencher Tooth Holder (Patent No: 896423)

Inventor: White, Kenneth M.

Location: Calgary

Comments: N/A

Description: THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:

1. A digger tooth mounting comprising a pocket adapted to be mounted on a digging machine or the like, a sleeve releasably secured in said pocket by interengagement of exterior surfaces of said sleeve with complementary surfaces of said pocket, said exterior surfaces being generally symmetrical with respect to a medial plane of said sleeve such that said sleeve is adapted to be releasably secured in said pocket selectively in either of two alternate orientations, said sleeve having a recess extending longitudinally thereof a, an inclination to said medial plane, a digger tooth having a shank received and releasably retained in said recess said tooth having a tip extending forwardly of said sleeve at one or other of two dispositions in relation to said pocket corresponding to the orientation of the sleeve with respect to the pocket.

2. A digger tooth mounting as claimed in claim 1 wherein said sleeve has a forward end from which said recess opens and a rearward end towards which said recess extends, said exterior surfaces of the sleeve tapering towards the rearward end thereof, said exterior surfaces being received in wedging engagement with said complementary surfaces.

3. A digger tooth mounting as claimed in claim 2 wherein said pocket is provided with a bore extending generally transversely of the recess in said sleeve, said sleeve having two corresponding bores either of which can be registered with said pocket bore dependent upon the orientation of the sleeve in said pocket, locking means being provided which are engageable in said registering bores to releasably secure said sleeve in said pocket.

4. A digger tooth mounting as claimed in claim 3 wherein said locking means comprises a retaining pin.

5. A digger tooth mounting as claimed in claim 2 wherein at least one of said exterior surfaces of said sleeve is formed with at least one shallow recess in which is received locking means in the form of a lockwasher the opposite sides of which press respectively against the bottom of the shallow recess and the corresponding mating surface of said pocket, said locking means being operative to releasably secure said sleeve in said pocket.

6. A sleeve adapted to be releasably secured in a pocket in a digging machine by interengagement of exterior surfaces of said sleeve with complementary surfaces of said pocket, said exterior surfaces being generally symmetrical with respect to a medial plane of said sleeve such that said sleeve is adapted to be releasably secured in said pocket selectively in either of two alternate orientations, said sleeve having a recess to accommodate the shank of a digger tooth said recess extending longitudinally of said sleeve at an inclination to said medial plane such that when mounted the tooth extends from said recess at one or other of two dispositions in relation to said digging machine pocket corresponding to the orientation of the sleeve with respect to the pocket.

7. A sleeve as claimed in claim 6 wherein said sleeve has a forward end from which said recess opens and a rearward end towards which said recess extends, said exterior surfaces of the sleeve tapering towards the rearward end thereof.

8. A sleeve as claimed in claim 7 wherein said exterior surfaces of the sleeve are adapted to be received in wedging engagement with said complementary surfaces in said digging machine pocket.

9. A sleeve as claimed in claim 8 including at least one recess opening from an exterior surface thereof and adapted to receive locking means for retaining the sleeve releasably in said pocket.

10. A sleeve according to claim 9 wherein said at least one recess comprises a shallow circular recess and said locking means comprises a lockwasher.

11. A sleeve according to anyone of claims 7, 8 or 9 wherein said recess tapers towards the rearward end of the sleeve.
