A Member of a Western Separatist Party is Elected in Alberta

In the 1980s, following the re-election of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the western separatist movement began to grow within the province of Alberta. Many Albertans were quite upset with federal government policies such as the National Energy Program . Separatist rallies were held throughout the province and several separatist organizations emerged, most notably, the Western Canada Concept (WCC).

In 1982, Gordon Kesler, a candidate for the Western Canada Concept won a by-election that was held in the riding of Olds-Didsbury. However, the party's success would be short lived. In the 1982 provincial election held later that year, the party failed to win any seats. The lone incumbent for the party, Gordon Kesler, failed to be re-elected. The western separatists no longer had a voice in the legislative assembly.
