Leduc: Causes and Effects

An Agricultural Community

Harvest scene, Leduc area, Alberta. The surrounding area near Leduc was covered by groves of deciduous trees. The oil wells with their tank farms were located mostly to the west, intermingled with farm homes. In the other direction, the countryside had many farm homes surrounded by groves of trees and dairy farms.

While the discovery of oil focused attention on Leduc, the price of farmland was relatively stable, indicating the position of the farmers of the district and the returns being made from farm produce. Many of the Leduc district farmers specialized in dairy herds, poultry and hogs, with few growing grain for sale to any great extent.

Over the 1951–1981 period, the agriculture sector experienced a general decline due to rising mechanization and productivity and overall presented a declining contribution to employment.
