Agricultural Innovations—High-Manure Application

Alberta Research Council scientists, along with researchers from the University of Alberta, Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, and Agri-Food Canada are conducting research aimed at providing producers with a simple tool to determine sustainable rates for applying manure to land. While transporting manure is costly, applying too much manure to land will reduce crop yield  and may threaten the environment. ARC's research is intended to help producers maximize manure application rates, while taking environmental and economic factors into account. The research team is conducting field trials on experimental plots to test various application rates on both cultivated land and forage plots. The work is expected to yield a model for determining suitable application rates for specific sites, based on soil condition, plant growth and climate. Once the model has been tested for effectiveness, the Research Council will provide demonstration workshops for producers.
