Beginning in the early 1970s, Sister Nancy LeClaire, a Roman Catholic religious sister of Cree ancestry, found that Cree children were not retaining their language.  With the help of a three-ring binder and an incredible dedication to her cause, she began her monumental task by  writing down Cree words she knew and used every day. Here we would like to share Sister LeClaire's story with you through an article that first appeared in Legacy Magazine read about Sister Nancy's work and the making of The Alberta Elder's Cree Dictionary.
