Something From Nothing: The Shumiatcher Saga
Filmaker David Paperny profiles the legendary Shumiatcher family,
who arrived in Calgary after persecution in Russia at the turn of
the 20th century. The family created the famous hat making
company, Smithbilt, synonymous
with the white cowboy hats of the Calgary Stampede and the 1988 Olympic
Games in Calgary.
This film is one of the Scattering of Seeds series from White
Pine Pictures. The series celebrates the character of
immigrants who staked their futures and those of their families on
a second chance in Canada.
