As the son of Lutheran missionary parents of Norwegian ancestry,
Chester Ronning was born in China but also lived with his family
near Valhalla Centre in northern Alberta. As a teacher and
diplomat, he was an important bridge between China and North
America, advocating recognition of the People's Republic of China
and its admission into the United Nations.
Valhalla is the mythical home of Viking gods, but it was also the
Alberta home of Scandinavian settlers led by Norwegian pastor H.N.
Ronning.
