Alberta
had made a great contribution to the First World War, as
many men enlisted to serve in all areas of the armed services.
There were many well-known fighter pilots like
Captain Wilfrid
Reid (Wop) May of Edmonton,
Roy Brown, also of Edmonton,
Donald MacLaren of Calgary and Keg River,
Fred McCall of Calgary, and
George Gorman.
Other Albertans distinguished themselves in other areas of
the aviation field, areas such as aircraft repair and
maintenance. Though such roles did not carry quite the same
mystique and public recognition as that of the pilots', they were
critical to the success of the war effort.
All of these men returned to Alberta and made a contribution
to the development of a civil aviation industry. These early
efforts were the foundation of the aviation industry we enjoy
today.
