Arts and Culture

Alberta arts and culture has been developing as more artists, writers, poets, visual artists, film, and media artists find the atmosphere in the province welcoming and encouraging.

At one time in the early history of Alberta there were limited opportunities to create and display works of art as the limited population was focusing their efforts on settlement and building the infrastructure needed. But with ongoing economic prosperity and the arrival of diverse people from around the world, Alberta has become a leading centre for the development of all forms of art and culture.

Theatres have been established to bring new drama to audiences, and Alberta writers, poets, playwrights, performers, and artists are increasingly gaining recognition, winning national and international awards. Films and new media are being developed in the province as the province continues to provide strong support for creators' efforts. The numerous festivals held throughout Alberta every year provide a venue for artists to showcase their talents and for delighted spectators to watch.
