Telephone Era in Alberta >> The People
>> Work Force >> Management
Telephone companies are complex but unified organizations that
are constantly evolving to accommodate new ideas and technology. It
is the duty of the management part of the company to make the
intricate, interconnected web of people function cohesively and
efficiently.
The management team of a telephone company controls and directs
the business and its expenditures, and orchestrates all of the
people who work within the company to provide a strong, successful
telecommunications service for its customers.
There are various management positions in a telephone company.
Most often, there is a general manager to whom other managers from
the various branches of the company report.
Another section is in charge of equipment and building, who
through research and extensive surveys determines which type of
equipment is necessary for installation and in which areas.
There are engineering managers who are responsible for
maintaining the quality of connections, ensuring electrical safety,
and establishing other safety standards. Others are responsible for
emergency power in exchange buildings, construction and
rearrangement of existing buildings, and purchase of land upon which
to build.
A plant extension group in a telephone company deals with the
capital and budget, often conducting studies and surveys to
determine a company’s capabilities and needs. This section also
projects future growth to make planning for future employees,
buildings and facilities easier.
Yet another engineering division deals with all outside telephone
equipment such as aerial and buried cable. By working both with
other city departments and other groups within the company, the
people in this area are responsible for determining the most
economical methods of servicing new and existing areas. They
estimate costs and work with budgets, monitoring total expenditures.
They may also conduct studies to make sure that the engineering
methods currently in use are the best available, and comparable to
those being used by other telephone companies.
A successful company requires a good customer services
department, and a telephone company is no exception. There are
sections that deal with customer complaints, including billing and
connection problems.
There are certain areas of company management that are found
exclusively in a telephone business. One such example is the branch
that deals with the creation and distribution of telephone books and
yellow pages. Another involves the people who make sure that the
operation of public pay phones works smoothly and efficiently.
Together, these sections of management work together with the
labour division to provide the best possible service to customers.
