The wall telephone became more compact when systems provided power
from the telephone office, and batteries were no longer needed in
each phone. A dial was added for use with automatic switching
equipment, and a combined handset replaced the separate transmitter
and receiver components. Early models still had wood housings but
Bakelite plastic was introduced in the 1930s.

Box Telephone
As telephone technology grew more sophisticated, telephones reduced
in physical size. This brief video segment features a display that
shows the early evolution of the wooden box telephones used at the
turn of the 20th century.
