Organization Name: Medicine Hat Volunteer Centre
Volunteer's Name: Saara Hook
About this volunteer: Whether it is serving meals to the homeless or helping a neighbour cut the lawn, there are a wide array of heart-warming stories to be heard about Albertans who generously give of their time. Albertans like Saara Hook, a computer programmer who came to Canada from Finland in 2002.
“Saara walked into the Volunteer Centre one day in 2003 and is still here,” says Medicine Hat Volunteer Centre’s Executive Director Kim McClymont of one of the Centre’s greatest gifts.
Saara was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in her late teens. However, she did not let that stop her from giving the gift of her time to help others through the Volunteer Centre.
In fact, Saara says that “finding the Volunteer Centre (Medicine Hat Volunteer Centre) is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
“Saara is a shining example of overcoming barriers through volunteering,” adds Kim with enthusiasm and gratitude.
Saara has volunteered as webmaster, redesigned the website, developed databases, co-lead a summer youth project, volunteered as an internet tutor and with a local theatre group.
