Alberta College
One of the largest music schools in Canada, the Music Conservatory at
Alberta College was established in 1903 and has been affiliated with the
college since 1973.
Since its inception, Alberta musicians of all levels
have been able to attend individual and group courses offered by the
school. There is a program for every skill level, age or instrument in 55
different studios. University transfer credits are also available for
students who wish to continue their musical education at a post-secondary
institution.
While individual lessons are the main focus, ensemble
groups offer a unique chance for musicians to combine their talents with
others in a semi-professional setting. These groups cover a wide range of
instruments and music styles including a percussion ensemble, flute choir,
saxophone quartet and Celtic harp ensemble.
In addition to a more formal classical instruction, the
college is home to the Schola Cantorum choral program, summer camps for
school aged children and the music in early childhood program. Festivals
and concerts, showcasing the wide range of talent from their students,
occur throughout the year.
Located in an historic building in downtown Edmonton as well as various
other campus locations throughout the city, the institution has been run
by Grant MacEwan College since July, 2002.
The college has seen many successful musicians pass
though its doors including pianist Angela Cheng and opera singer Sherrill DeMarco.
