University of Alberta

University of Alberta crestAs the largest post secondary institution in the province, the University of Alberta (U of A) offers many options for the performing arts student who wishes to obtain a degree in their chosen field.

The department of music offers several areas of study including composition, theory, conducting, ethnomusicology, keyboard, music history, music technology, strings, voice/choral, wind and percussion. These courses are a part of the general Bachelor of Music degree and serve to give students a chance to specialize in their particular interests. The program teaches essential music skills with a practical understanding of music while enhancing the student's knowledge of repertoire and research skills.

In addition to their core program, the U of A offers various credit and non-credit ensembles for students to take part in. Instrumental chamber music groups, orchestras, bands, choirs and opera workshops are available. These groups give musicians an opportunity to improve their performance skills while collaborating with their peers.

The department of drama at the U of A was established in 1949, when education students were taught theatre in portable trailers. Half a century later, the university is home to a respectable program with a professional grade facility and an international reputation. Bachelor degrees are offered in acting, design and technical theatre, and graduate level courses are offered in design and directing. The Timms Centre for the Arts includes a 320-seat theatre, and the fine arts building boasts classrooms, rehearsal space, two acting studios, a dance studio and Thrust Theatre.

There are no degree programs for dance at the U of A, though courses are offered recreationally. The university dance club has more than 1,700 members and is considered the largest student group on campus. Ten classes are held each week for participants of varying skill levels, with open practice sessions once a week. The club also hosts various social events throughout the year including the annual New Years Eve Hourglass Ball.
